About the NYAD

The New York Academy of Dentistry is an organization of dentists dedicated to the enhancement of the dental profession through the promotion of the highest standards in education, clinical practice, and ethical conduct.

Mission

As stated in its by-laws, the mission of the New York Academy of Dentistry is "To uphold the dignity and honor of the dental profession; to exalt its standards; to extend its sphere of usefulness; to promote the advancement of dental science; to encourage and develop professionally-controlled journals and other means for the publication and distribution of dental literature; to elevate the standards of dental education; and to exert an influence toward placing the activities of its members and of the dental profession upon the highest ethical and non-commercial plane."

Goals

The New York Academy has identified specific goals which will facilitate the accomplishment of its stated mission. They include:

  • Promoting the highest ethical standards for the practice of dentistry by holding its fellowship to a strict code of ethics and, simultaneously, developing educational programs relevant to professional ethics in local dental schools and professional organizations.
  • Assembling the fellowship for lectures to disseminate cutting-edge scientific information relevant to current developments in clinical practice.
  • Supporting the good work of the Dental Clinics of the Boys' Club of New York.
  • Encouraging the fellowship toward service to the profession and the community at large.
  • Nominating to Associate Fellowship only those candidates who best exemplify the qualities of service, professionalism, and ethical practice that are consistent with the mission of the Academy.
  • Elevating to Fellowship those Associate Fellows who demonstrate continued professional growth through service to dentistry and their communities.

History

The New York Academy of Dentistry was founded in 1921 by a prestigious group of nineteen dentists who represented the leadership of the dental profession in New York. It was a tumultuous and exciting time in the history of dentistry. Professional education was not uniform or even organized, scientific publications were mostly proprietary, and, ethical standards were unknown. The New York Academy was instrumental in bringing about the positive changes in these areas which have been to the benefit of all dentists.

For more than seven decades, the Academy has consistently carried out its mission by pursuing its targeted goals in all areas. By its choice of topics and lecturers, the Academy has continued to provide an outstanding educational forum for its fellowship. Its continued support of the Dental Clinics of the Boys' Club of New York represents a commitment to community service that is unmatched by any professional organization of its kind.

The New York Academy of Dentistry re-mains committed to the ideals of its Founders. The ideals of promoting ethics, fostering education, enhancing the Profession, and communication of scientific in-formation can never be dismissed if Dentistry is to remain in high public trust and esteem.

Dentistry is constantly changing and evolving; It is the goal of the New York Academy to help bring about these changes, and to make their impact on the profession a positive force for continued growth in the future.

Wherever there are dentists in the New York area who are deserving of recognition and encouragement, the Academy's goal is to seek them out and offer them Fellowship, so that the work begun in 1921 may continue.
In recent years, with the institution of the Overseas Seminars and the Annual Golf and Tennis Outing, the Academy has been able to foster greater social interaction among the fellowship.

And most recently, the Ethics Program whose development the Academy has headed in the local dental schools and professional organizations, has earned it the national renown that it deserves as a standard bearer of ethics in the profession.

Membership

Historically, The New York Academy of Dentistry has never had a set number of Fellows. However, by recent tradition, there are usually 250-300 Active and Associate Fellows in the Academy. Leadership in and service to dentistry, exemplary ethical con-duct, ongoing commitment to dental education, and service to one's community are all hallmarks of fellows of the Academy.

Selection to Associate Fellowship identifies an individual as one who is recognized for his or her service to the profession and the community as a leader and an example of the highest ethical conduct. Fellowship carries with it the responsibility of continued professional growth and service.
